White Heavy Shirting WLN 128

$14.00

100% Linen, ~7 oz., 56" wide

Heavy off white linen shirting can be used to make soldier's shirts and common men's shirts. It could also be used to make hunting frocks, short wide sailor's trousers (sometimes called slops), wallets, linings, and work aprons. Less often breeches, jackets, waistcoats, and summer coats can be made of this. The Providence Gazette in 1772, included an ad with "Ran away . . .  a Negro Man Servant . . .  had on and carried away . . .  two white Linen Shirts" cited in Taylor, Runaways, Deserters, and Notorious Villains From Rhode Island Newspapers Volume 1, 2001. For hand sewing try 35/2 white linen thread.
