This 1/2 inch (13 mm) lace is a very common lace used by many armies and navies. It’s often considered the standard pattern of lace for the Royal Navy but was used by the US Navy both for over 200 years. It has also been used by the U.S. Army for over a century. For 18th century use, there was no standard lace used. Each tailor used what he had available. As a result, there was no regulation officer's lace, and the same gold lace on an officer's coat could also be found on civilian clothing.
