100% Silk, 9 weight, 20 m spool
It is believed that quilting weight thread is the closest today to 18th century button hole twist. But to hand sew with this thread you must be sure to wax it first otherwise it will unravel. Using smaller lengths will also help. This thread will also work for making death head buttons or other passementerie buttons.
Tire thread is made only from the highest grade of filament silk and sold mostly for machine sewing. It will slide effortlessly through the machine. The twist is designed to prevent slipping and skipping of stitches forming a strong seam.
Our silk thread is available in up to 171 colors so if you don’t see your color preference amongst our selection let us help you find the best match, however because silk has a natural luminosity a near match will reflect the fabric color and appear to be a close match. Failing that silk has a natural affinity for dye and the lighter colors may be used to dye the color of your choice. Ask us about dyes that have been developed especially for silk.
