Unbleached Tow Linen WLN 109

100% Unbleached Linen ~5 oz., 54" wide

The natural unbleached color of linen varies from quite dark to lighter shades. This unbleached linen is one of the lightest shades. Tow is a cheap unbleached fabric related to brown linen, oznabrigs and rolls and was often used to make men's shirts and hunting frocks. This linen would be a bit light to use for trousers, and overalls although tow was used to make these. Women's shifts, gowns, petticoats, aprons, and pockets were also often made of tow. Household linens such as bed sheets and pillow cases may also be made of tow.

For example in the 1772 Pennsylvania Gazette an ad included "Run away . . .  a servant girl . . .  had on, and took with her . . .  two petticoats, one . . .  [of] tow linen, 2 coarse shifts, 2 or 3 tow aprons" cited in Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls. Although a light shade of unbleached, this fabric will slowly whiten with washings and time in the sun. Hand sewing this fabric would work best using unbleached linen thread.
