Blue and White Stripe WLN 672

$15.99

55% linen/45% cotton, ~5 oz., 57" wide

Blue and white stripes are some of the most commonly described in runaway accounts and seen in swatch books. They were commonly used for women's petticoats, jackets, and gowns. Men's waistcoats and shirts as well as an occasional lining were also made of blue and white stripe linen. In the 1771 Pennsylvania Gazette, an ad reported "a certain woman . . .  said she was married to one Samuel White, and lodged there over night, with her female child, about 9 or 10 months old; and next day went off, and left the said child at the subscriber, and never returned again; she wore . . .  a short linen bedgown, striped blue and white" as cited in Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls. Blue linen thread for hand sewing and white cotton twill tape would work well for this material.
