Brown Stripe WLN 682

100% linen, ~6.5 oz., 58" wide

Besides blue, brown stripes were the second most commonly used in early America and Europe in the 18th and early 19th centuries. They were commonly used for women's petticoats, jackets, and gowns. Men's waistcoats and as well as an occasional lining were also made of light brown stripe linen. For example an ad cited in the 1776 The Boston Gazette an ad included "Deserted from a company under my command the following persons, viz . . .  a man . . .  Had on . . .  a striped linnen jacket" by personal communication with Mike Barbieri. Unbleached linen thread for hand sewing would work well for this material.
