Blue Grey Stripe WLN 684

100% linen, ~5.5 oz., 58" wide

Blue stripes sometimes had another shade of blue included in the stripe. This stripe has an alternating grey stripe. Stripe linens were commonly used for women's petticoats, jackets, and gowns. Men's waistcoats as well as an linings were also made of stripe linen. For example an ad in the 1778 Pennsylvania Packet had "Ran Away, a Scotch servant Girl . . .  had on and took with her . . .  a striped linen short gown" as cited in the book Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls. Unbleached or off white linen thread for hand sewing would work well for this material.
