Corduroy is a variation of velvet which was sometimes made of wool. As a wool velvet this could date much earlier and early on velvet came in a great number of varieties. Wool cord was First made in 1810 in England and later as produced as Bedford cord. Later still in 1845 it was manufactured in Bedford, Massachusetts. For example in The Proceedings of the Old Bailey, London of 1869 "seven lengths of trowsers, three of Bedford cord, three of worsted cord, taken away" as reported in a theft trial. Black linen thread 35/2 for hand sewing matches this fabric as will black quilter's thread for sewing button holes.
