Throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries there were many types of thread buttons available. Star buttons were less common than death head or basket but are found on some original garments. These buttons are a perfect size for a man's waistcoat and are made of silk over a pasteboard button mold. It is best to cover buttons in foil before dry cleaning.
