Disc Pin Cushion

Inspired by originals, each pin cushion is made in the USA of cow's horn by a master horner. Inside two discs is a wool filling covered by silk and hand sewn into place. Disc pin cushions like this first make their appearance around the 1830s and continue to be made to about the 1860s and later. It appears as though there were many styles made of many materials. A loop of silk ribbon may be added to hang it from a chatelaine or it may be used as is within a sewing kit. A similar pinwheel is pictured in McConnel, Bridget, 1999, The Story of Antique Needlework Tools; Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. See page 126.

Many pincushions are included in the Proceedings of the Old Bailey, London although they usually don't describe them. For example The Proceedings of the Old Bailey, of 1843, a witness stated "I searched the box for the coppers, and found this purse in it; and this pincushion in a locked box".
