1/4" Real Gold Vellum Metallic Lace

This 1/4" gold lace is identical to that found on Andrew Jackson's coat dated c. 1812 at the National Museum of American History. It is also identical to the lace found on a British Loyalist's coat possibly made in Detroit dated c. 1780 at Fort Ticonderoga. Many British and Continental officer's coats show 1/8" lace outlining their buttonholes during the second half of the 18th century and into the early 19th century. During the 18th century each officer went to his own tailor for clothing. As a result, there was no regulation officer's lace, and the same 1/4" (6.35 mm) gold lace on an officer's coat could also be found on civilian clothing.
