100% wool, 59" wide

Four yards long remnant.

This 19th century worsted has a light grey ground with a complex series of 3 medium grey cross bars that are 1 3/4" apart in the weft and 2" apart in the warp. Each of these has a an almost imperceivable, discontinuous very narrow stripe of purple in the middle of each crossbar surrounded by other discontinuous grey stripes. First appearing in the Proceedings of the Old Bailey in 1841, tweeds seem to have become popular in the mid 19th century for country sports wear and was used for men's outdoor clothing throughout Brittan. For example in London's The Proceedings of the Old Bailey in 1841 a bolt of "10 yards of woollen cloth, called tweed, value 10s." was stolen. Grey 80/3 linen thread would work well for hand sewing this fabric.
