Silk ribbon of 1/2" (12 mm) width has several uses including accenting chip (aka straw) hats, caps, and gowns. Black silk ribbons were commonly tied around the neck usually seen on French women of 2nd half of the 18th century often with a gold or silver cross or heart suspended from the front.
