Hand Knit Scotch Bonnet, Midnight Blue

Hand knit Scotch bonnet by Sara Dickfoss. Hat size 23".

These caps are hand knit and fulled of 100% wool into a dense warm cap. The fulling tightens the knitting into a hand made cap that is very warm with little stretch. Although called a "tam" today, in the 18th century it was known as a "Scotch Bonnet". It was such a common garment that it became a symbol of Scots, particularly Scottish Highlanders. Dark blue was the most common color for the traditional bonnet.

This cap is based on one on p.4 and 6 of the Shire Booklet Scottish Knitting by Helen Bennett. The bonnet pictured in this book dates to about 1718. Rarely are bonnets described in America.

Raised, processed, spun, died, knit and fulled in the USA.
