c. 1710-1790s Shift Kit

Basic Shift Kit

Included in this kit are:
3 yards unbleached linen
spool beige 50/3 linen thread
one set pewter sleeve buttons

Because this is put together for a class in which you draft your own pattern no directions are required. Lacking a pattern I have this set for a wider date range. The Larkin and Smith A Manual for the Construction of 18th Century Women's Shifts c. 1750s-1790s can be purchased at your option. Please note that many older shift patterns don't include sleeve buttons for a c. 1710-1790 shift. This kit does include sleeve buttons reflecting the most recent research for shifts. This fabric is not coarse but does reflect the look of cheap unbleached fabrics used for many common shifts made of "tow", "oznabirg", "rolls" and "homespun". For example in The Pennsylvania Gazette in 1775 "Run away . . .  an Irish servant Girl . . .  had on, and took with her . . .  a coarse tow shift" Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls.
