Larkin and Smith A Manual for the Construction of 18th Century Women's Shifts c. 1750s-1790s

The Larkin and Smith A Manual for the Construction of 18th Century Women's Shifts is the most recent and complete pattern yet made. Many shift patterns lack a wristband along with sleeve buttons. This fabric is not coarse but does reflect the look of cheap unbleached fabrics used for many common shifts made of "tow", "oznabirg", "rolls" and "homespun". For example in The Pennsylvania Gazette in 1775 "Run away . . .  an Irish servant Girl . . .  had on, and took with her . . .  a coarse tow shift" Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls.
