Brown Manchester Velvet WCN 301

$10.00

100% cotton, 56" wide

Cotton velvet spread rapidly after the 1750s and were known as "Manchester goods". Manchester velvets were used in the 18th century for men's waistcoats, jackets and breeches. Velvets were also used for cuffs, collars and facings on coats and for women's shoes. In the early 19th century velvet was used for women's outerwear such as spencers but also in trims and accessories. For example in the 1776 Pennsylvania Gazette an ad included, "Run away . . .  an Irish servant man . . .  had on . . .  brown velvet breeches" cited in Wenches, Wives and Servant Girls. Brown linen thread matches this fabric as will brown quilter's thread for sewing button holes.
