A soft twill wool commonly used next to the skin, as in women's shifts and under-petticoats, also for gowns and aprons. For men it was typically used for shirts, drawers, under-jackets and waistcoats. It may be viably substituted for the cheaper (and less soft) baize and plain fabrics.
