Banyans were worn at home by middling to gentry for much of the late colonial period as loungewear and even when greeting guests of lower status and sometimes out-doors from 1750 to 1800 and possibly later. For example included in The Proceedings of the Old Bailey, London, in 1766 a drunk bedded down with a woman who stole all his clothes in the morning, a woman “brought me some rags to put on, (producing an old ragged piece of a banyan, a pair of cloth breeches, ragged and full of holes) these are they”.
