This plain weave worsted (which included many types such as calimancoe in the description below) is a beautiful even black, not mixed or flecked (it’s hard to photograph black) & is light weight & soft. This is a good weight for women’s gowns, stays & petticoats but is frequently described for women’s shoes as well. A Clergymen’s or other men’s summer suit or for either men’s or women’s jackets, & men’s waistcoats & coats. For example advertised in The Pennsylvania Gazette of 1776, “Was Stolen . . . by a woman that called herself Peggy Moor, and said she served her time with one Seater, a Tavern keeper; she had on a black calimancoe petticoat” as cited in Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls. Black 80/3 linen thread for hand sewing. For hand sewing buttonholes black silk quilters thread & buttonhole twist will match. A matching bottom binding for a petticoat may be had with 3/8″ to 7/8″ worsted tape.
