Cotton Barrel

Barrels like this were made to keep your thread clean. This barrel is made of horn and stands 2″ tall with a removable lid for easy refilling. A similar cotton barrel may be found on page 44 of Taunton, Nerylla, 1997, Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries; Antique Collectors’ Club Ltd. Sewing tools like this can be very difficult to date but it appears cotton barrels date to the early 19th century possibly the 18th century.
