Diamond Ribbed Gray Wool Stockings

$36.00

These smooth machine knit creamy white wool ribbed stockings are inspired from a stocking excavated from the HMS Invincible that sank in 1758. It has a diamond pattern woven at the ankle. At the time of writing this, I’ve been unable to find descriptions of women wearing ribbed stockings. The book Cloth and Costume determined that white was likely the most common color of stocking. Cited in Wives, Slaves, and Servant GirlsPennsylvania Gazette of 1776 included “Run away . . .  servants, viz. Frederick Brick, a German, born in the country of Hesse . . .  Had on and took with him . . .  a pair of ribbed and a pair of plain worsted stockings.” These stockings are 99% wool with 1% nylon at the top to help hold them up.
