Mixed stockings may have made up as many as 20% of stockings described in Rhode Island runaway ads from 1760 to 1783. Mixed was made by spinning one ply of gray and one ply of natural into a 2 ply yarn. In The Providence Gazette in 1776 “RUN away . . . a Negro Fellow . . . had on when he went away . . . a thick black and white mixed Jacket and Breeches, Stockings much of the same Colour”.
