Bed gowns were worn by working women and do not require stays for a good fit. In The Pennsylvania Gazette of 1776, "Ran Away . . . a servant girl . . . had on . . . a blue and white calico bed gown with long sleeves, considerably broke" as cited in Wives, Slaves and Servant Girls.
