This woolen is best called a cloth since it lacks much nap on either side. Buff colored cloth is often described in the 18th and early 19th centuries. For example shared from personal communication with Mike Barbieri in The Connecticut Courant of 1776, "Run away . . . a prisoner . . . Had on when he went away, a . . . buff coloured jacket". Buff 35/2 linen thread will be the best match for hand sewing and for sewing button holes you might try ivory silk button hole twist.
