This buckle was found in the Hudson River Valley and matches the shoe buckle BCS 127. It will accommodate a strap of 1 1/8", its overall dimensions are 1" by 1 3/8", and is available in both brass and nickel. For example in The Pennsylvania Packet in 1778 "Said thief [a Frenchman] had on when he went away . . . calfskin pumps with large round silver shoe buckles, and knee buckles of the same pattern".
