This block print handkerchief is inspired by several extant and illustrated handkerchiefs with borders and sprigged centers. Printed handkerchiefs were worn by both men and women of the working class. These cotton handkerchiefs have a rolled hem all the way around. In the 1773 ” Pennsylvania Gazette an ad included "Run away . . . a Dutch servant girl . . . had on . . . [a] blue stamped handkerchief" cited in the book Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls.
